Dear Dave-- an open letter

Dear Dave,

May I call you Dave?  Mr. Matthews just sounds so FORMAL and I feel like I've known you forever and  honestly, we should be on a first name basis.

I was introduced to you and your band when I was nothing but a kid.  It was the summer I was 17 and met a cute boy while on summer vacation at the beach.  He had brown hair, dark eyes and could play the guitar.  The song he sang to me sitting on the sand while the waves came in at tide was none other than your, "Crash Into Me."  I was smitten both with the boy and with your words.

While it didn't work out with the boy  (we exchanged a few letters, but the long distance thing just doesn't work), my relationship with you only grew.

You may not know it, but you were there the night I met my now husband and then later at our wedding.  I've hummed your songs to all three of my babies as I rocked them to sleep.   You're even a valuable member of our super fun impromptu kitchen dance parties.

I've seen you several times in concert and have enjoyed each one so very much.  And considering I was willing to face the sweltering summer heat of an August night in Memphis, to be up front for the show with Willie Nelson.. that's saying a lot because it was MUGGY AND MISERABLE.
Willie & Dave

I was a big sweaty mess, but man.. that was fun
When I heard about your upcoming tour, I was thrilled beyond words that my town was added to the list.   And then I made the effort to look at purchasing tickets.

$70 for ONE grass seat?  Are you crazy?  I know you're Mr. Music Man and don't have to sit in the seats to actually watch concerts anymore, but that is absolutely absurd.   Why would I pay $140 to sit on a blanket ON THE LAWN to listen to you?

I don't argue that your songs aren't amazing.  They are.  And you aren't too shabby to look at (and will remain on my LIST), but until you've been around this industry for at least 50 years, I don't think you can demand those ticket prices.

As an example-- I saw James Taylor and Carole King-- one of the arguably BEST concerts I've ever attended-- and didn't pay $70 to sit in an actual seat.  I've priced tickets for the upcoming Fleetwood Mac tour and thoe don't compare to your pricing.  And while I LOVE DMB, these are LEGENDS I'm talking about..   There's a difference hon.

So sadly I won't be joining you on tour this summer.   I'll simply have to love you from afar via Pandora and iTunes.    It doesn't have to be this way.  Hopefully next summer, you'll price the tickets more reasonably.

Until then....

I know! It's really getting ridiculous. But, Ahem...I'll argue with you that Dave's not a legend. Any band that's been around almost 20 years and still gets a bunch of college kids at the show is a soon-to-be legend in my book. In related news, all 6 slots of my minivan CD player have Dave CDs in them. Today I pulled up alongside another car with a firedancer sticker (while I was listening to Dream Girl) and I wanted to wave, but thought better of it.

However, I am honestly considering not going this year. I've only skipped out 3 times because I was HUGELY pregnant 3 separate Julys. I only sit in seats because I don't need to be sitting in the grass with a bunch of kids smoking weed. I'm too old for this shit. Last year, I had the VERY back row of the seat section on for the Friday show. Pretty much all the seats get bought by Warehouse members pre-sale. And as much as I do love Dave, I'm not going to pay to be in his fan club.

I love DMB! I was also at the concert at Redburd Stadium and yes, it was extremely hot, but well worth it. We won't be going this year either. I just can't see spending that much money.

Daw, thank you for the shout out. I am still thinking this is crazy expensive to see him. I'm trying to remember how much it was for me to see The Who recently. I think the tickets may have been $55-60. I paid for a seat, it was indoors so I also paid for air conditioning etc. But this is THE WHO. It was amazing, I would have paid more to see them.

I like how you put this... LEGENDS. While Dave is a great performer, he's certainly not a Legend you're so spot on with that.

I saw Dave maybe 4-5 times I can't remember it was the late 90's early 2000's. He was awesome but I slowly gave up on shows. I guess I stopped believing but when I hear old songs I'm taken back to those days and I love it.

I hope Dave gets the message - Dear SUPER STARS WE'RE IN A RECESSION!!! Have you seen the ticket prices for Jay Z and JT's new concert... $1500 a seat for front row, *cough* who do you think you are??? I would only pay that much to get up and personal with Pearl Jam, The Boss, The Stones or AC/DC. It's that simple. Even then I know I wouldn't do it... do you know how far I can stretch $1500??? A LONNNNG way. ;)

Well done girl! I hope he sees this!

I don't understand why any artist charges so freakin' much for a concert and then the fees on top of that... it's almost not even worth going.

I like concerts but I surely don't want to pay over $200 for two of us to go.
