How I met my husband

Kludgy Mom

The prompt: Tell the story of meeting your significant other

It's part of Kludgy Mom's Back to School, Back to Blogging.   There is now an idea bank of various prompts we all came up with just for those days you can't think of what to write about it.  And honestly, I found it hard to just pick one.    While browsing the great ideas, I realized I've never told the story of how I met my husband & figured it was a good place to start.

A little back story.  In the middle of 2003, I was finally reaching the end of a horrible 3 year relationship.  We were not good together, but after my marriage failed I felt like I needed to make something work.  So I stayed with a guy that was bad for me.  We would fight, break up, get back together only to fight again.  The cycle continued until it came to a head that summer and I was done.  The breaking point is for a different story entirely.   In May, I walked away completely free.

Fast forward to the story at hand.    It was late June.  I was single & loving it.  Since the break-up, I had lost some weight & had a great tan since it was summer.  After work one Wednesday, I called my best friend just to talk.   I rarely went out during the week between working, kids & school.  During the conversation I mentioned how I was having a cute day.  You know those days where you just KNOW  how great you look- that was me that day.  I was then ordered to get my butt to her house so we could go out.  That's just what I did.  I couldn't let my great sundress & freshly highlighted hair go to waste.

I met my friends & we rode to a local college bar.  There was a cover, but being girls were allowed to walk right in.  We started talking to a few people we knew when a guy walked up that recognized one of my friends.  He had some more people with him so we all started making small talk.   Then he walked over to talk to me.  Normally, he's a shy guy.  He rarely talks & does not like big groups.  At all.  He'd been out with friends for a few hours & had been drinking so he was a rare form.
Remember where I said I was wearing a great dress?  Yeah, he likes dresses & he noticed.  He walked up to me and sat in my lap.   We started talking, realizing we both went to the same college.    We were both seniors, but I still needed to get my Math out of the way.  Since he was an Engineering major, he offered to help with my homework and got my number.   He got off my lap so he could walk to the bar and get us more drinks.  He returned and started talking to other people.  Minutes passed when it dawned on me that if I actually needed help, I would need HIS number for it to work.  So I asked.  That's when he said, "Let me call my girl & then I'll give it to you."  My phone was already out, ready to put in the number & my heart sank.  I thought this cute guy was into me, but turns out he really only wanted to help with homework.

And my phone started ringing.   The smile on my face must have been huge.  It was him calling so I would have his number.   I was his girl that he needed to call.   I left the bar with him that night and never looked back.   He proposed that December.  Our wedding was the following October.   It happened fast, but I know without a shadow of a doubt I made the right decision.

When he looks at me and calls me his girl, I still get the same butterflies I did that night.

On our honeymoon; barely a year after we met.

How did you finally get to the point where enough was enough?
